Fort Worth, Texas – The 18th Annual FWISD Cowtown Classic High School Girl’s Basketball Tournament gets underway on December 3rd, 2009. Four of the region’s top teams are represented in this year’s tournament, including: Mansfield Summit HS (2008-09 5A State Champs), FW Dunbar HS (4A Quarter-finalist), Irving MacArthur HS (5A Regional Finalist), Cedar Hill HS (5A Quarter-finalist), along with several area and out-of-area playoff teams.

The first Cowtown Classic tournament, in 1992, was inspired by Denise Yankie, a former FWISD Assistant Athletic Director.  Through her efforts, and those of her successors, the Fort Worth Girls Coaches Association and the help of hundreds of volunteers, the Cowtown Classic has become an annual feat that honors high school athletics.

A total of eight games will be played on the opening day. There will be four games each at Fort Worth ISD’s Billingsly Field House and the Wilkerson-Greines Activity Center according to Director of Athletics Herb Stephens, Jr.

“The participants in this tournament epitomize what high school girls’ athletics stands for – educational excellence through competition,” Mr. Stephens says. “This year’s tournament is poised to be the best yet.”

Competition continues at both venues on Friday evening, December 4th and all day on Saturday, December 5th. The finals for both the Championship and Consolation brackets will be played at the Wilkerson-Greines Activity Center. A complete tournament bracket is available
